RP bets shatter 3 meet records
VIENTIANE, Laos — The Philippines smashed three Games records on its way to four gold medals Sunday and set an all-Filipino final in billiards to celebrate its most productive day yet in the 25th Southeast Asian Games.
Swimmers Daniel Coakley and Ryan Arabejo made their mark as the fastest and the toughest guys at the pool following record-breaking wins.
Coakley, who turned 20, reset his own record in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 22.62 seconds, relegating Arwut Chinnapasaen of Thailand (22.75) and Russell Ong of Singapore (22.98) to the silver and bronze, respectively.
Arabejo won’t be denied this time in swimming’s version of the marathon – the 1,500-meter freestyle – powering home in 15:37.75 to break one of the oldest records in the book.
The previous mark stood at 15:43.27 owned by a Thai swimmer during the 1995 Games in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Arabejo’s win came after losing the 400-meter freestyle and the 200-meter backstroke titles this week.
Miguel Molina, already a two-gold winner, was beaten to fourth place in the 200-meter breaststroke won by Thai Nuttapong Ketin.
Arniel Ferrera won his fourth straight gold medal in hammer throw, breaking the Games and Philippine records in the process at the National Stadium.
Ferrera threw the hammer to 61.62 meters on his fifth attempt to eclipse his gold medal throw of 60.98 meters two years ago in Thailand.
Ferrera, who trains whole year round in Baguio, is a long way to go before reaching the Asian level. Japanese Murofushi Japan holds the world record of 78.72 meters.
Before dusk fell, Rosie Villarito won the women’s javelin throw with a heave of 49.69 meters.
Villarito, silver medalist two years ago, beat Vietnamese Lo Thi Hang (45.95 meters) and Tran Thi Tham (45.01 meters).
The Philippines sent its second fighter into the boxing finals when veteran light flyweight Harry Tanamor hardly worked up a sweat in putting away Htet Aung of Myanmar, 12-4.
Over at the SEA Games Golf Club, the Philippines bounced back in the hunt for three of four gold medals.
Going into the final round, the men’s team trails Thailand by four shots while the women’s team leads Thailand by a single stroke.
Chihiro Ikeda is also just two shots off in the race for the women’s individual crown.
In beach volleyball, the Philippines lost all its three matches.
The four-gold harvest raised the Philippines’ gold production to 12 golds aside from 16 silvers and 19 bronzes.
Another gold is assured in billiards after Ronnie Alcano and Gandy Valle dumped separate opponents in the semifinals of the 8-ball pool singles.
In the race for the overall title, Thailand edged ahead with 29 golds, four up on Vietnam and seven on Singapore.
Malaysia was running fourth with 20 golds followed by Indonesia with 16. The Filipinos won two silvers and four bronzes in different disciplines
