Jurence Mendoza pulled off the day’s biggest win last Monday by stunning top pick Akio Sy, 6-2, 6-0, to barge into the semis of the boys’ 18-years-and-under division in the Philta-Olivarez Age Group Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The 13-year-old Mendoza, seeded No. 3, caught the more experienced Sy flat-footed with his superb groundstrokes to earn a ticket in the Final Four against unseeded Rash Manatad.

Manatad also created a ripple when he downed fourth pick Raymark Gulfo, 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.

Mendoza, the country’s top 14-under netter, also stormed in the boys 16-under semis via a 6-2, 6-2 win over John Mavrick Victoria. In the semis, he will face Romeo Dimakiling, who drubbed Juan Alfonso Opulencia, 6-1, 6-4.

Top seed Arjohn Dela Cruz recovered from an opening set defeat to complete a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 triumph over seventh pick Calvin Canlas and arrange a semis duel with sixth seed Hans Asistio in the 16-years class.

Asistio booted out third pick Kyle Parpan, 6-3, 6-3.

Asistio likewise booked a 14-under semis seat with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Andrew Cano. He meets Calvin Canlas, a 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 survivor over Parpan.

Betto Orendain dumped Argil Lance Canizares, 6-2, 6-2, and Vince Salas squeaked past Eric Olivarez Jr., 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, to arrange the other semis showdown.

Salas also made it in the boys 12-under semis after beating Justin Asilo, 6-4, 6-4. He collides with Alberto Lim Jr., a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Mimo Tomacruz.

In the girls’ side, 16-under top seed Shannin Olivarez trounced Marinel Rudas, 6-1, 6-2, to set up a finals meeting with the winner between Samantha Coyiuto and Cristabelle Paulino.

Girls’ 14-under fourth pick Joy Yuen also made it to the finals with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Patricia Paez. She will face the winner between Crizabelle Paulino and Ericka Lagura.
