2 RP women netters fall; men’s singles underway

VIENTIANE, Laos — The Philippines bowed out of the women’s singles in tennis Wednesday after Denise Dy and Riza Zalameda lost their semifinal matches against Indonesian rivals at the National Sports Complex.
Dy, slowed down by a knee injury, was beaten by Lavinia Tananta, 5-7, 4-6, while Zalameda bowed to Ayu Fani Damayanti, 3-6, 2-6.
Both players still have two doubles matches to play later in the day, putting more pressure on Dy’s fragile knee.
RP coach Randy Villanueva said consecutive tough matches have put a heavy toll on Dy’s right knee, but the United States-based netter does not want to quit.
“We’re not sure the extent of injury. It could just be a bruised knee or a torn ligament, but Denise is a fighter, she will continue to play,” said Villanueva.
Dy needed three hours and 15 minutes to dispose of top seed Suchanun Viratprasert of Thailand, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6, in the quarterfinals.
She returned a few hours later in mixed doubles where she teamed with Zalameda to outlast Damayanti and Tananta, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5.
The departure of Dy and Zalameda left the Philippines only four events to fight for the gold: men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
The Filipinos also have four scheduled matches for the day.
Dy and Zalameda return to face Thais Nudnida Luangnam and Suchanun in women’s doubles.
In men’s singles, Fil-Americans Cecil Mamiit and Treat Huey try to arrange an all-Filipino final.
Mamiit clashes with Tan Nysan of Cambodia while Huey has a more difficult assignment against top seed Danai Udomchoke of Thailand.
In mixed doubles, Zalameda and Huey take on Sandy Gumulya and Christopher Rungkat of Indonesia while Dy and Mamiit take on Jessy Priscila and Nesa Artha of Indonesia.
Late Friday, the tandem of Mamiit and Huey advanced into the final by beating Udomchoke and Kittiphong, 7-5, 7-6.
