Meryl Streep vies against self in Golden Globe nom
Premiere actress Meryl Streep will not only compete with fellow contenders but also against herself at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
The most nominated thespian in the history of the Globes got two slots for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy” with her role as Chef Julia Child in “Julie & Julia,” and as a wife rekindling romance with her ex-husband in “It’s Complicated.”
It’s not only Meryl who scored double nods for acting. Sandra Bullock and Matt Damon are nominated for lead actor/actress and supporting actor categories as well.
The “Miss Congeniality” star goes head-to-head with Meryl with “The Proposal,” where she played a monster boss who hired his publishing assistant for another job - her fiancée. Also vying for the title are Marion Cotillard for “Nine,” and surprisingly, as critics deemed, Julia Roberts for “Duplicity.”
Sandra’s role in the sports drama “The Blind Side” also earned her a nomination in the best drama actress category, alongside Emily Blunt (“The Young Victoria”), Dame Helen Mirren (“The Last Station”), and first-time nominees Carey Mulligan (“An Education”) and Gabourey Sidibe (“Precious: Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire”).
Meanwhile, Matt garnered a “Best Performance by an Actor – Musical or Comedy” nod for his portrayal of a top executive turned FBI spy in the dark comedy “The Informant!” and a “Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role” nom as the South African Springboks captain in the Nelson Mandela biopic, “Invictus.”
Daniel Day-Lewis (“Nine”), Robert Downey Jr. (“Sherlock Holmes”), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“500 Days of Summer”), and Michael Stuhlbarg (“A Serious Man”) are also in the running for best musical and comedy actor.
Shortlisted in the best drama actor category are Jeff Bridges for “Crazy Heart,” George Clooney for “Up in the Air,” Colin Firth in “A Single Man,” Morgan Freeman for “Invictus,” and another surprise contender, Tobey Maguire for “Brothers.”
Leading the 2010 Golden Globe Awards race is “Up in the Air,” with six nominations, including best picture and acting honors for George Clooney, Anna Kendrick, and Vera Farmiga.
Closely behind “Up” is the musical “Nine” with five nominations, and sci-fi epic “Avatar” and war film “Inglorious Basterds” with four. Another war pic, “The Hurt Locker,” obtained spots in three categories, together with “Invictus,” “It’s Complicated,” “Precious,” and “A Single Man.” Five of these films are lined up for “Best Motion Picture – Drama,” namely “Up,” “Avatar,” “Inglorious,” “Hurt,” and “Precious.”
“Nine,” “Julie & Julia,” and “It’s Complicated” obtained distinctions in the "Best Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy" category. Joining them are “The Hangover” and “500 Days of Summer.”
Announced last Dec. 15 at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, the Golden Globes nominees were determined by the 85 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is composed of critics and reporters.
The second-biggest award-giving body next to Oscars will declare its winners on Jan. 17, 2010, with a live telecast on NBC. Comedian Ricky Gervais will host the show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Los Angeles.
