BANGUED, Abra – The Bersamin family here is hoping that law enforcement agencies will be able to work for a clean, honest and orderly elections in the May 2010 elections to give justice to the untimely demise of the late Rep. Luis “Chito” Bersamin Jr., one of the victims of political violence that caused a sudden reversal in the political situation in the province over the past two years.

Charry Bersamin, eldest daughter of the slain lawmaker, made the pronouncement on the occasion of the third death anniversary of Rep. Bersamin Wednesday as she called on politicians in the province to work for the attainment of lasting peace in the province for the benefit of the present and future generations.

She said they are wishing that their father would be the last victim of political violence in the province so that the youth of Abra may not to be carried away by the culture of fear and violence that has reigned over the past several decades.

Last Dec. 16, 2006, Rep. Bersamin was gunned down by several armed men, believed to be hired killers, in front of the Mount Carmel church in New Manila, Quezon City after he attended the wedding of his niece. Also killed in the same shooting incident was Senior Police Officer 2 Adelpho Ortega, Bersamin’s bodyguard, while Allan Sawadan, the lawmaker’s driver, was injured in the incident.

After the confession of some of those involved in the case and the successive arrests and surrender of other persons, former Abra Gov. Vicente Valera, who was alleged as the mastermind in the brutal murder, was formally charged with double murder and frustrated murder charges now being heard by the Regional Trial Court of Quezon City.
