Ateneo spikers end frustration vs UST
Ateneo completed a historic victory, scoring a stunning upset over University of Santo Tomas, 32-30, 25-23, 8-25, 19-25, 15-13, Saturday in the 72nd UAAP women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Second-year sensation Angeline Gervacio continued her splendid display, firing game-high 26 points to lead five players in double-figures as the Lady Eagles fended off the Tigresses’ comeback attempt to grab the win in one hour and 54 minutes.
But what triggered a jubilant celebration for the squad of coach Roger Gorayeb was that it was just Ateneo’s first-ever victory over powerhouse UST squad since joining the league in 1978.
Lefty Kara Acevedo and lanky sophomore Fille Cainget registered 11 points each while Gretchen Ho and Bea Pascual added 10 points apiece as the Loyola-based volleybelles tied their victims at second on identical 3-2 records.
Angeline Tabaquero and Shakey’s V-League Most Valuable Player Aiza Maizo led UST in a losing cause with 21 points each.
In yesterday’s men division action, University of the Philippines dismantled National University, 25-11, 25-19, 25-16.
Dominico Lucindo scored 15 points Mark Justin Sagad added 13 as the Maroons needed just 54 minutes to repulse the Bulldogs.
