Duterte warns firecracker ban violators
DAVAO CITY (PNA) – City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte reminded would-be firecracker violators during Christmas’ and New Year’s Eves of a minimum stay of three days in jail.
The mayor reiterated this stern warning during his television program “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” on Sunday, clarifying that since December 25 and January 1 fall on a Friday, firecracker ban violators who are caught will only be released on the following Monday.
According to Duterte, this is already the ninth Christmas since firecrackers and pyrotechnics were banned in the city during his term.
The mayor said that instead of wasting their money on expensive pyrotechnics, it would be best if they donate their money to the church or other non-government organizations (NGOs) that cater to the poor and the needy.
He said the firecracker ban is one of his legacies that he wanted the Dabawenyos to fully enjoy.
The mayor’s two other legacies include the anti-smoking ordinance and the 2 a.m. ban on liquor.
“I know you’re angry with me for that, but it’s intended for the common good. Hundreds if not thousands were disfigured and injured due to pyrotechnics. In hindsight, when I recall what I have done for my fellowmen, it’s these three ordinances – firecracker ban, smoking ban and liquor ban,” he said.
“That’s my little contribution to our community,” Duterte proudly added.
Last year, a total of 83 violators were arrested throughout the holidays.
Of the said number, 59 violators were minors who were released to their parents and village chairmen after one day.
However, the minor offenders had to stay in jail for “safekeeping” and were brought home the day after.
