132 vying for QC councilor

With six elective slots available in each of Quezon City’s four districts in the 2010 elections, 132 aspirants will be vying for the position of councilor in the city each hoping to land a spot in the 26-strong Quezon City Council which counts one member each from the city’s Association of Barangay Chairmen (ABC) and Samahang Kabataan Federation (SKF).

Records at the office of the election officer of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) revealed that district two which has more than 50 percent of the city’s voting population has the most number of candidates for councilor with 47 followed by the fourth district with 33.

The city’s third district has 31 contenders for councilors with the first district bringing up the rear with 21 aspirants.

Among the aspirants of the second district were five prominent personalities from the field of showbiz and entertainment who have thrown their hats in the political arena.

Those who have filed their certificates of candidacy (CoC) for councilor in the second district include broadcaster Precious Hipolito-Castelo; comedian Roderick Paulate; sexy actress Ara Mina, Hazel Reyes in real life; actor Alfred Vargas and another actress Glenda Garcia.

Hipolito-Castelo who is a news anchor at IBC 13 is the wife of Councilor Winston Castelo who is running for congressman in the second district under the Liberal Party.

Paulate and Garcia are running under the New People’s Coalition while Vargas is running under the banner of Lakas-Kampi.

Ara Mina, who is the daughter of former congressman Chuck Mathay and granddaughter of former Quezon City mayor Ismael Mathay is running as an independent.

The former congressman is seeking to regain his post in the second district while the Mathay patriarch is trying to reclaim the city’s top post which he held from 1992 to 2001.

In the third district, renowned violinist John Lesaca is running for councilor under the Lakas-Kampi-CMD party while Ogie Diaz, Roger Diaz Pandaan in real life and one of the co-stars of the current tearjerker “May Bukas Pa” of ABS-CBN is running as an independent.

Three candidates from the entertainment world namely Ricky Davao, Jigo Garcia and Maria Isabel Lopez who is a former Binibining Pilipinas titleholder and actress are running for councilor in the fourth district.

Vice mayor Herbert Bautista who is running for mayor under the Liberal Party and Councilor Aiko Melendez who is gunning for the vice-mayoral post under the Partido ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) also came from the world of show business.

With the huge number of movie and entertainment personalities seeking elective posts, the city’s majority floor leader and independent mayoralty bet Ariel Inton said that Quezon City has further cemented its claim of being the “City of Stars”.
