General Emilio Aguinaldo town has 39 contenders vying for the mayoral, vice mayoral, and council race, the Cavite Provincial Commission on Elections (Comelec) said over the weekend.

Aguinaldo is the smallest town in Cavite. Latest census report said that there are only 17,818 people in the municipality's 14 barangays (villages) Lawyer Juanito V. Ravanzo Jr., Provincial Comelec supervisor, said that Aguinaldo has the least registered voters among the 19 towns and four cities of the province.

In a report to Ravanzo, Priscilla P. Golfo, Aguinaldo Comelec officer, said that the town has four contenders running for mayor, another four for vice mayor and 31 for councilors.

Aguinaldo is a fifth-class municipality of Cavite. The area was named after General Emilio Famy Aguinaldo, the country’s first president.

The Aguinaldo used to be a Catholic parish in the town of Maragondon, it was learned.

The town, like the nearby Magallanes municipality, is virtually hard up in terms of facilities and services.

Aguinaldo and Magallanes are the only two towns in the province that have no telephone service providers. Officials in the two areas have to use cell phones or hand-held radios for their communication.
