At least 35 athletes who won individual gold medals in the recent Southeast Asian Games in Laos will each receive P100,000 in cash as additional bonuses from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) this Tuesday.

Athletes who won more than one gold individually or as members of gold-winning teams will receive amounts due them with team members dividing the cash incentive equally.

Another P100,000 is also due each gold medalist courtesy of donors solicited from sports patrons tapped by PSC chairman Harry Angping, and P100,000 more under a law approved by Congress.

In all, a gold medalist can get as much as P300,000 or double this amount if he won two golds.

Besides these, some athletes are also getting separate cash incentives from their associations and sponsors such as those received on Monday by members of the boxing team from the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines and SMART.

Chairman Angping said the distribution of the cash bonanza will be the highlight of the Christmas party to be hosted by the PSC for the RP delegation that took part in the biennial meet.

A thanksgiving mass at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall at 10 a.m. will precede the festivities. Afterwards the group will transfer to the Ninoy Stadium where the cash awards will be distributed.

In all, the PSC will release P3.8 million for the athletes’ bonuses.

Swimmer Miguel Molina and billiards player Rubilen Amit will be the biggest beneficiaries, each getting P200,000 for winning two gold medals.

Molina triumphed in the 200-meter and 400m individual medley while won the women’s 8-ball and 9-ball events.

Tennis player Cecil Mamiit and golfer Chichiro Ikeda will receive P100,000 each for winning in their respective events. They will also get their share for being part of the winning men’s tennis team and women’s golf team.

The PSC incentive program, however, does not include silver and bronze medal winners. But RA 9064 provides P50,000 for silver and P10,000 for bronze SEA Games medalists. It could not be determined when these amounts will be released.
