The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Thursday assured that the design of the women’s urinal would secure the safety of the female against thieves and other bad elements.

MMDA chairman Oscar Inocentes said they are finalizing the design of the urinal made especially for women following concerns of safety, and to prevent attacks by holduppers, snatchers and even rapists.

He added that the urinal will be covered and will have one cubicle to accommodate only one woman at a time, thus thwarting bad elements from preying on women.

“At first, the design of the urinal is for two persons but we decided to have it for one to secure the safety of the users, especially at night time,” said Inocentes, adding that the facility will be complete with electricity and water.

According to Inocentes, calls from women’s group prompted him to pursue the project , citing that “maraming tumatawag dito na hindi pantay-pantay ang tingin sa babae, bakit ang babae walang urinals.”

The urinals will also be painted with apple green color, in support of the national government’s campaign against pollution and climate change.

He said the urinals will be set up along major thoroughfares, and in each MRT and LRT station to benefit commuters and motorists, and targeted for completion by next month.

The cost of each urinal would be P30,000-P35,000 and will not be contracted outside, instead MMDA contractors will assemble them since materials are available inside the agency, Inocentes stressed.

The urinal is free of use while MMDA personnel will maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of the facility 24 hours.

Inocentes said new projects under his leadership will be colored apple green and would not carry pink color, which is associated with predecessor, now vice presidential candidate Bayani Fernando.

He, however, clarified that existing pink-colored road structures remain unless they will be changed or their color tarnished due to high cost.

“Yung mga bagong projects lang, ito lang ang papalitan, yung mga existing, hindi natin babaguhin ang kulay kasi very high cost kung gagawin yon,” explained Inocentes.

He stressed that green color supports the government drive against global warming, stressing that there is no political motive behind it as administration bet Gilbert Teodoro has green as his signature color.
