2 missing passengers of ‘Baleno 9’ found alive 2 weeks after sinking
Two missing M/V Baleno 9 passengers have presented themselves to the authorities in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro almost two weeks after the sinking of the sea vessel, the Philippine Coast Guard reported Sunday.
PCG Commandant Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo confirmed that two missing passengers were rescued during the search and rescue operation for the roll-on-roll-off vessel that sank off Verde Island in Batangas, killing at least six passengers with 46 others listed as missing.
In the information given by PCG Southern Tagalog District Commander Commodore Cecil Chen, the two survivors were identified as Jocelyn Datoon, 38, and her four-month-old baby Anabelle.
Based on the reports received by Chen, Jessie Datoon, the husband of Jocelyn, reported to the Coast Guard Station in Calapan, informing them that his wife and daughter were alive.
According to Chen, Jocelyn called his husband around 10:50 a.m. on Saturday, informing him about her current status. Based on her statements, Mrs. Datoon said she and her baby were rescued by a group of fishermen onboard a motor banca last Dec. 26.
Mrs. Datoon failed to inform her husband or the authorities after the rescue incident because she couldn’t speak due to the trauma and shock she suffered during the tragic incident.
One of the fishermen who rescued Datoon and her daughter said the survivor couldn’t remember or say anything for almost two weeks until last Saturday when she finally regained her composure.
The PCG expressed delight at the development and expressed hope that some other missing passengers would appear in the coming days.
