UST sluggers nip Ateneo
University of Santo Tomas leaned on Korean slugger Chun Wang Song to score a 10-9 thriller over Ateneo in Sunday's action of the 72nd UAAP baseball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The right-handed Song delivered a bases-clearing three-run triple to center field that scored burly Haruta Estanislao, Angelo Castillo and rookie Carlo Conge for a 10-8 lead.
UST reliever Gerald Mitra gave up a run in the next frame but fended off Ateneo’s last-ditch comeback for the win.
The Tigers' win came before defending champion Adamson opened its bid for a three-peat with a 9-1 rout of La Salle that was stopped after six innings because of darkness.
Song, who two seasons ago won the league's Rookie of the Year for hitting four homeruns, had a rousing start to his third year with the Espana-based squad with three hits and four runs-batted-in (RBI).
UST won despite blowing a 7-2 lead in the sixth frame as the Eagles produced six runs to take an 8-7 advantage.
Luke Bernardo drilled an RBI single to tie the game before scoring the go-ahead on a Guillermo Pablo's single in the next at-bat.
