Adamson kept its hold of second place while Ateneo continued its winning run in the 72nd UAAP women's volleyball tournament Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Falcons went to veterans Angela Benting and Jill Gustillo to sweep University of the Philippines, 25-19, 27-25, 25-18, while the Lady Eagles surprised Far Eastern University, 20-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16.

Benting and Gustillo fired 16 and 15 points apiece as the San Marcelino-based squad of coach Dulce Pante notched its fifth win in six outings.

Defending champion La Salle leads the field with an immaculate 6-0 record.

Adamson can ultimately secure second spot after the first round if it could beat UST on Wednesday, also at the San Juan venue.

On the other hand, lefty Kara Acevedo made 13 points while Bea Pascual and sophomore Fille Cainglet added 12 points each as Ateneo defeated the Lady Tamaraws for the first time since 2004 or a streak of eight consecutive games.

The Lady Eagles improved to 4-2 to tie idle University of Santo Tomas for third place. FEU got 22 points from Cherry May Vivas but it was not enough to carry them to victory. The Lady Tamaraws fell to solo fifth with an even 3-3 record.
