5.2-magnitude quake jolts Metro, Luzon
A moderately strong earthquake jolted Metro Manila and neighboring provinces at 6:54 p.m. Tuesday.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the temblor, measuring 5.2 magnitude, originated at around 30 kilometers southeast of Olongapo City.
But the US Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards website, the earthquake's epicenter was located 50 kilometers west of Manila, in the vicinity of Bataan, with an estimated depth of 112.4 kilometers below the earth's surface.
Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said the earthquake was felt at Intensity 4 in Metro Manila, particularly in the cities of Pasig and Makati.
Citing field reports, Solidum said the earthquake was felt at Intensity 3 in Quezon City and Tagaytay City.
The earthquake, which was of tectonic nature, was also felt by residents living as far as Indang, Cavite; and Plaridel, Bulacan.
Seismologists said tectonic earthquakes occur when the plates holding the earth's crust move against or away from each other.
