100 safe Pinoys listed
The Department of Foreign Affairs posted Sunday a list of 100 Filipinos in Haiti who have been found to be in safe physical condition four days after a devastating earthquake tore through the Caribbean country.
The DFA said that according to 10th Philippine Contingent Commander Lt. Col. Lope Dagoy, an initial census of Filipinos in the Delmas district of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince was conducted to determine their current locations and conditions.
“Some 100 Filipinos, including two religious nuns, were identified, accounted for and found to be in safe physical condition,” the DFA said.
Six Filipinos have yet to be rescued: Peacekeepers Army Sgt. Eustacio Bermudez, Air Force Sgt. Janice Arocena, and Navy Petty Officer Pearlie Panangui; Jerome Yap, administrative officer of the Principal Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Haiti; and two members of the Filipino community, Geraldine Calican and Grace Fabian.
The DFA assured that efforts are ongoing to rescue Fabian and Calican who remain trapped in the rubble of the collapsed Caribbean Supermarket in Port-au-Prince.
“A 40-person rescue team from the
United States is at the collapsed four-storey Caribbean Market and is helping in search and rescue efforts,” the DFA said, adding that the Philippine Peacekeeping Contingent requested the US military attaché office in Haiti to send the team.
The leader of the rescue team informed the Philippine contingent that they heard tappings and other indications of life among the rubble.
“Extensive efforts to rescue other officials, personnel and affiliated individuals who are still unaccounted for, including Filipino UN peacekeepers Sergeants Bermudez, Panangui and Arocena and Filipino UN civilian staff member Jerome Yap, continue,” the DFA assured.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines remained hopeful they are still alive and will be rescued soon.
Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner, Jr., AFP spokesman said rescue teams from different nations are now conducting massive retrieval and rescue operations at the Christopher hotel, which used to serve as the headquarters of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti, and other establishments affected by the strong earthquake.
“Yun mga naririnig na boses at mga tappings sa wall dito sa Christopher Hotel medyo humihina na; siguro maaaring nanghihina na din yun mga survivors. But we are still hopeful na may mga survivors,” said Brawner.
He said all efforts are now being done to find them and it could be just a matter of time before they are rescued.
Meanwhile, Brawner said the AFP is preparing the 11th Philippine peacekeeping contingent to Haiti which will be headed by Lt. Col. Cliffors Cyril Riveral on orders of President Arroyo.
There are 157 officers of the AFP and 15 officers of the PNP in the original UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti.
