Jason Ivler finally arrested, 2 NBI agents hurt in shootout
Jason Ivler was hurt while two operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) were wounded during a shootout when authorities stormed the suspect’s family’s home in Quezon City.
“Nag-ala Rambo siya (He went amuck like Rambo),” said Atty. Roel Lasala, deputy director of the NBI’s Intelligence Unit, about the brief firefight between Ivler and operatives of the NBI.
Meanwhile, Lasala said that they will file additional charges of resisting arrest against Ivler while his mother, Marlene Aguilar, will also be charged for obstruction of justice and harbouring a criminal. It can be recalled that Aguilar previously claimed that her son had already left the country.
Lasala said that Ivler was armed with a rifle and wore a bandolier loaded with rifle clips when he appeared before NBI operatives who were inside his home at No. 23 Hillside Drive, Blueridge A Subdivision. He cited that Ivler slept in a room underneath the stairs and may have spent the Christmas holidays there.
Two NBI agents were hurt from the initial fire and were identified as Lito Magno, chief of the NBI’s Special Action Unit, and Special Agent Anna Lara of the NBI’s Intelligence Unit.
Magno sustained a graze wound in his right thigh while Lara got hit in her chest from a bullet ricochet. Magno was brought to the Medical City while Lara was also rushed to the QMMC.
NBI operatives in the house retaliated and were able to hit and subdue the suspect who has been wanted for the death of Renato Victor Ebarle Jr., the son of Malacañang Undersecretary Renato Ebarle Sr., during a road rage incident last November 18.
Ivler was rushed to the Quirino Memorial Medical Center (QMMC) from his home for treatment of his wounds.
Dr. Fernando Lopez, chair of surgical department of the QMMC, said that Ivler sustained two gunshot wounds that passed through his body.
Ivler got hit in the right shoulder while another hit the left side of his abdomen.
Lopez also said that the shot in the abdomen also lacerated his spleen and ruptured his large intestine.
The doctor stressed the need for Ivler to undergo operation and assured that the suspect has a good chance of surviving.
Lasala said that 50 NBI operatives were sent to Ivler’s house to serve two arrests warrants, one for murder charges on the death of Ebarle and another issued in 2004 for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide. In 2004, Ivler was involved in a road collision where Presidential adviser on resettlement Nestor Ponce Jr. died while the official’s wife and another person were hurt from the incident.
The NBI official bared that the agency received information two weeks ago that Ivler has been staying at his family’s home in Blueridge where his mother Marlene Aguilar and father Stephen Pollard also stayed.
Since there have been two failed raids conducted by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) on the same house, Lasala believes that Ivler returned to the house in December as the suspect may have felt safer going back.
Operatives arrived there at around 6 a.m. yesterday but were stopped by Marlene from entering the premises and were only able to get in at around 7:30 p.m.
While Marlene was being hysterical at the NBI’s presence, Ivler suddenly appeared armed to the teeth and started firing his weapon but eventually fell from agents’ retaliatory shots.
Following the encounter, Marlene and some members of the household were brought to the NBI for questioning.
