Two separate earthquakes — one a magnitude 5.0 in the Richter scale — rocked different parts of the Philippines Sunday.

The state-run Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the magnitude 5.0 tremor occurred at 3:54 a.m. and was felt at Intensity II in Puerto Galera and Alabang, Muntinlupa. The epicenter was traced 58 kilometers (kms) northwest of Batangas City.

The tremor had an intermediate focal depth of 160 kms.

Meanwhile, a 2.2 magnitude earthquake also shook Kanlaon City, Negros Oriental at 9:28 a.m., Phivolcs said.

The tectonic tremor was felt at Intensity I in Brgy. Ara-al, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental. Its epicenter was traced at 26 kms. southwest of Kanlaon City.  The earthquake had a 23 kms. shallow focal depth according to Phivolcs.

Aftershocks were expected by Phivolcs from the Batangas tremor but ruled out damage from the two earthquakes.

Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said: “The Batangas earthquake was due to faulting of subducted plate related to Subduction along Manila trench that is why it is deep. For Kanlaon, (it is because of movement of) a local fault.”(JC Bello Ruiz)
