TVXQ, Big Bang named cultural ambassadors
K-pop boy groups TVXQ and Big Bang have been named cultural ambassadors of their country.
The title was bestowed by the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange (KOFICE), which credits the two groups for bringing the Korean pop music wave to other countries especially in Japan.
“Due to the contributions they have made in the development of the cultural aspect through popular music, we have decided to appoint them as ‘Cultural Ambassadors’ as a form of recognition,” KOFICE was quoted as saying in a post on TVXQ fan site onetvxq.com.
The KOFICE cited the success of the groups’ albums and their overseas activities.
TVXQ is one of the most successful K-pop bands in Korea and other neighboring Asian countries including Japan, where their songs have continually dominated the music charts.
Similarly, Big Bang is also enjoying massive popularity among Korean teens.
Big Bang, whose members include G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P. Daesung, and Seungri, is currently preparing for their “2010 Big Show Concert,” which will be held at the Seoul Olympic Stadium from Jan. 29-31.
KOFICE said the honor is awarded yearly to people who have contributed to promoting Korean culture.
