Globe Telecom Inc.’s $70 million second fiber optic backbone network (FOBN2) is now fully operational, announced President and CEO Ernest L. Cu Tuesday.

The high capacity transmission FOBN2 system spans over 1,900 kilometers of inland and submarine cable, covering most areas of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao and is expected to boost the quality and resiliency of Globe’s network service.

The cable system has an initial design capacity of 400 Gigabits per second (Gbps) and is upgradeable to handle future traffic growth. It was completed just two months ago.

Essentially, FOBN2 will serve as protection route for network traffic that is currently carried on FOBN1, a parallel DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplex) transmission system built in early 2000.

FOBN2 will likewise provide transmission capacity to support the ongoing roll-out for broadband services, and networking requirements of Globe enterprise and corporate customers.
