Armida Siguion-Reyna assails MTRCB for ‘power tripping’

Veteran actress-singer Armida Siguion Reyna has joined critics in assailing the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) for its recent suspension of the popular ABS-CBN show, “Showtime.”
According to Siguion-Reyna, herself a former head of the said board, the decision to suspend the show was a clear exercise of "power tripping."
She added that it was only right for the appellate court to reverse the MTRCB’s suspension order.
It is recalled that "Showtime" was given a 20-day preventive suspension by the MTRCB due to some controversial remarks made by actress Rosanna Roces.
ABS-CBN appealed the decision even as it acted quickly by removing Roces from the show, to no avail.
The show was eventually replaced by “Magpasikat Ka,” which the MTRCB then also thought of shutting down due to its alleged “similarity” with “Showtime.”
The Court of Appeals (CA) later issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) stopping the MTRCB from enforcing its 20-day preventive suspension order on the show, and “Showtime” went back on air Jan. 19.
Siguion-Reyna slammed the board for what she called its ignorance of the law, especially when enforcing suspension orders.
“Bobo ang administration na ito,” she said.
Siguion-Reyna is now calling for a review of law concerning censorship, which she said is already out of date.
“We have to take it on. It’s time for change.”
She then went on to encourage television stations and movie outfits to create a better system based on self-regulation rather than to perpetually bow before what she called the “abuses” of the MTRCB.
