Nii Aryee Ayi finally made his debut and defending champion University of the Philippines blanked Ateneo, 2-0, for a share of the lead in the 72nd UAAP men's football tournament Wednesday at the Ateneo Erenchun Field in Quezon City.

After finally getting clearance from the UAAP board to compete in this season, the Ghana-born Ayi sealed the contest with an 88th minute goal.

Deo Senguinal gave the Diliman-based booters their first goal in the 45th minute in a game that saw five yellow cards handed to each team.

UP joined 2008 champion Far Eastern University and University of Santo Tomas in a three-way tie for the No. 1 spot after scoring similar shutout victories.

The Tamaraws won over La Salle, 1-0, on Dexter Chio's goal four minutes into the match while the Tigers blanked University of the East, 2-0, on goals from Christian de Juan (4th minute) and Mark Clarino (83rd minute).

Ayi showed up in complete playing attire in the Maroons' 2-0 win over UE last Sunday but was not fielded by coach Frank Muescan as the league was still deliberating whether he’s eligible to play or not.
