Estrada won't withdraw – Tiangco
Navotas City Mayor Toby Tiangco lauded the decision of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) dismissing the petition which sought to disqualify former President Joseph Estrada from running in the May 10 elections.
Tiangco, vice president of the Partido ng Masang Pilipino for the National Capital Region (NCR) said, the Comelec made the right move.
"Tama lang talaga ang ginawa ng Comelec," he said after the decision was rendered.
"Let the people decide, yan lang naman ang hinihiling namin. Sila naman ang boboto, " Tiangco said.
Tiangco will be “graduating” as mayor of Navotas after he completed his three terms as mayor. He will run for Congress unopposed this coming May 10 elections.
His younger brother John Rey Tiangco will be running as mayor without opponent. His runningmate is Vice Mayor PJ Javier.
Tiangco was seated beside Estrada who attended the promulgation after his lawyer allegedly invited him to attend.
At same time, Tiangco described as "black propaganda" alleged statements now being circulated by the former president's critics that he (Estrada) is backing out of his candidacy.
"Lalaban siya hanggang sa kahuli-hulihan. Hindi siya magwi-withdraw," the mayor said.
The Comelec's decision allowing Estrada to run for president came exactly nine years after the former president was toppled by People Power on January 20, 2007.
