University of the Philippines won via forfeiture over defending champion Adamson after the latter walked out because of a controversial call late in the ninth inning of their 72nd UAAP baseball match last Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The Maroons were leading 6-5 with one out and two runners on base in the last frame when a base hit to center by the Falcons' Joselito Bermoza sent home Edward Landicho from second to tie the match at 6-all.

But a few minutes later, tournament commissioner Rodolfo Lugay conferred with game officials and overruled the call made by home plate umpire Noel Francisco and declared Landicho out for obstruction for allegedly elbowing UP catcher Kenneth Natividad.

The sudden reversal angered the squad of coach Orlando Binarao whose players walked back into the dressing rooms. After Adamson failed to come back on the field for more than 15 minutes, organizers handed the win to the Maroons.

UP's controversial victory ended tied Adamson for first with identical 4-1 records and also snapped the Falcons' amazing winning run of 15 games dating back to Game 3 of the 2008 finals against University of Santo Tomas.

In other results, UST denied National University a chance to tie UP and Adamson for first following a 4-2 victory while La Salle edged past Ateneo, 5-2. The Tigers and Archers ended the first round tied at fourth with identical 2-3 records.
