UST upsets UP booters
A rookie with the courage of a veteran stood tall for University of Santo Tomas Sunday as the Tigers stunned the defending University of the Philippine Maroons, 2-1, in the 72nd UAAP men's football tournament at the Ateneo Erenchun Field in Quezon City.
Christian de Juan scored a brace, including the equalizer in the 61st before putting the game away with another spectacular move in the 73rd minute as the Tigers stayed unbeaten after three games.
In other results, 2008 champion Far Eastern University claimed a share of the tie with UP for second following a 3-1 victory over University of the East on two goals from Glester Sobremisana.
La Salle, on the other hand, claimed its first win of the tournament via a 1-0 victory over Ateneo. Both teams are tied for fourth with identical 1-2 records.
In the women's division, reigning titlist UST defeated Ateneo, 2-1, on goals by Nikki Regalado (seventh minute) and Marianne Narciso (17th minute). The Tigresses improved tom four points following an opening game draw.
Ahead in the standings are La Salle and FEU with five points (one win and two draws) with the latter winning over UP, 2-1, on a game-clinching goal by Frea Fado in the 78th minute.
