UST sweeps UAAP tennis
University of Santo Tomas trounced defending champion La Salle, 3-2, over the weekend to complete a five-game sweep of the 72nd UAAP men's tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
Determined to erase the stigma of an embarrassing loss to the Archers in last year's finals, the Tigers leaned on the efforts of Raymond Villarete and Miguel Narvaez to prevail.
Villarete defeated John Will Baldonado, 6-1, 6-1, in the first singles match while Narvaez edged past Mike Basco, 7-5, 6-3.
The España-based netters ended the first round with a perfect 4-0 mark while La Salle slipped to second place with a 3-1 record.
In the other game, University of the Philippines blanked University of the East, 5-0.
In Thursday's men's volleyball action at The Arena in San Juan, Ateneo stunned second-running Far Eastern University, 26-24, 17-25, 25-21, 27-25.
