Phivolcs records 3 tectonic quakes
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded three tectonic earthquakes Sunday but ruled out damages or aftershocks from the tremors.
Phivolcs recorded the first quake at 12 a.m. at a moderate 5.5 magnitude. It was located some 464 km southeast of General Santos City with a shallow focal depth of 4 km.
The quake was possibly sourced from the movement along the Philippine Trench.
Phivolcs likewise recorded a 3.7-magnitude tectonic earthquake at 1:03 a.m. Sunday which was caused by the movement along the East Zambales Fault.
The quake, located some 9 kms southwest of San Carlos City in Pangasinan, has an intermediate focal depth of 141 km.
Both quakes had no reported intensities felt.
On the other hand, the third tremor detected was recorded at 7:25 a.m. some 107 km southeast of General Santos City with an intermediate focal depth of 198 km.
The quake measured 4.8-magnitude and was felt at a weak intensity I in General Santos City, Phivolcs said.
The Philippines is prone to earthquake occurrences as well as volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because of its geographic location within the “Pacific Ring of Fire.”
