RP considers another medical team to Haiti
Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral Sunday said it is likely that the Philippines will send a second medical team to augment existing humanitarian efforts in quake-shattered Haiti.
In an interview, Cabral said the Philippine medical team sent earlier has been asked by rescue and relief authorities in Haiti if a second team will be dispatched to provide humanitarian aid to victims of the devastating quake in the Caribbean nation.
“It seems there is an apparent need of a second team, but we are waiting for their assessment and instructions,’’ said Cabral.
“For now, we are preparing for a second team in case there is a need to immediately send another one,’’ she added.
A 21-member medical team from the Philippines left last week for Haiti to assist in the global rescue and relief efforts following the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that left at least 200,000 dead and thousands others wounded. At least four Filipinos died in the quake.
The Philippine medical team was composed of surgeons, nurses, sanitary engineers, public health emergency specialists, an internal medicine specialist, a pediatrician, a psychologist and a social worker.
According to Cabral, the RP medical team has already taken over the job of a team from a Miami hospital and is expected to stay and serve in Haiti for two weeks.
As for the reported two Filipinos still trapped in the rubble of a collapsed supermarket in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, Cabral said there is no confirmation yet if they have already been rescued.
