Hope springs eternal for Haiti
Hope in disaster-ravaged Haiti was rekindled when movie and music stars gathered to raise funds in a telethon on Jan. 22 to benefit the victims of the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked the island.
Out of that telethon sprang “Hope For Haiti Now,” a 20-track set featuring performances from the MTV-sponsored show that includes Coldplay, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Wyclef Jean, Bono, The Edge, Jay Z, Dave Matthews, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, Sheryl Crow, Rihanna, Keith Urban, and more.
Available only as download, “Hope For Haiti Now” shifted 171,000 to make it the number one album in the US this week. The benefit album is the first digital-only album to top the Billboard 200 in the chart's nearly 54-year history. The telethon has already raised $58 million dollars for Haitian relief.
In the singles chart, Ke$ha continues to party at the number one spot for the sixth straight week with “Tik Tok.” Ke$ha blocks the surging new single “Today Was A Fairy Tale” from Taylor Swift, which debuts at number two.
Lady Gaga gets booted down to number three after staying so long at number two with “Bad Romance,” while Young Money featuring Lloyd is unmoving at number four with “Bedrock.”
Young pop singer Justin Bieber debuts at the top ten singles chart with “Baby” at number five, while Iyaz moves down a notch with “Replay” to finish at number six. David Guetta featuring Akon likewise moves a step down to number seven this week with “Sexy Bitch” (a.k.a. “Sexy Chick").
Jay-Z loses some major ground in the charts by dropping from number three to number eight with “Empire State Of Mind,” while Rihanna finds it “Hard” to maintain momentum and drops down a notch to number nine.
And finally, Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” falters on its climb to the top of the charts by going down three steps from seven to ten to close this week’s top ten singles chart.
