British artist taps local youth
CEBU CITY — Through the efforts of Christina Jensen, a London-based choreographer with designer Yin John in collaboration with this city’s local government, children from various non-government organizations here learned the art of contemporary dance and music through a five-week activity that will culminate with a three-day stage presentation at the historical Fort San Pedro this weekend.
Jensen, a degree holder of Bachelor of Arts in Dance Theatre with Masters in choreography, said in a press conference that as their five-week program is about to end, participants in the workshop which mostly consist of out-of –school youths and children will stage a three-day presentation dubbed “Project Anakatira: Sugbo Common Exhale” that will showcase unique dance moves in harmony with a particular kind of music.
“The show will run for three nights completely free to a limited audience, where for the first time in its history, Fort San Pedro will host a site-specific dance and music performance,” she said.
The performances are slated on February 5 to 7 where 15 young performers from the Cebu City Task Force on Street Children will stage results of their mentored interaction with Jensen.
“Participants of the presentation will showcase not only entertainment but contact improvisation as well,” said Jensen.
Moreover, the unique three-day event will be a celebration of free expression, shared learning and the dynamic power of dance and music.
Jensen also explained that what will make the presentation more interesting is that most of the participants have no previous experience on dance, theatre and art performance.
For his part, John said that the workshop they conducted did not only allow participants to learn and develop the art of dance and music, “it also imposed discipline and team work meant to boost the students’ level of confidence.”
