Gordon lauds OK of early voting bill
Senator Richard Gordon Wednesday lauded the Senate for approving on third and final reading the bill that would allow the conduct of early voting in the May 10 elections.
Gordon, principal author of the bill, said he is optimistic that it would be ratified before Congress adjourns this week.
The Early Voting Act of 2010 or Senate Bill 3570 is one step closer to being enacted into law. After approval by the bicameral conference committee it would be transmitted to Malacañang for the signature of the President.
“I am glad that that the early voting bill was approved in the Senate on third and final reading. It will be immediately forwarded to the bicameral committee where I expect its smooth passage,” said Gordon.
“Credible, honest and clean elections convey the voice of the people. Once the measure is passed into law and implemented, we can get the true voice of the people since a good number of voters will no longer be disenfranchised for lack of time to vote on the day of the elections,” he added.
The bill entitles poll workers, campaign workers, members of the media, law enforcers and others who, due to their duties and personal circumstances, do not have time to vote, to cast their votes ahead of elections day.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) which is mandated to carry out the law, would also determine which municipalities, cities and provinces are entitled to conduct early voting. (With a report by Ben R. Rosario)
