Malacañang appeals to candidates as campaign period begins
Malacañang appealed to all political candidates on Saturday to prevent any derailment of the 2010 elections as the campaign period starts this week.
Secretary to the Cabinet Silvestre Bello III said that every political candidate “should comply and abide by the rules prescribed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).”
“The only way we can expect an honest, orderly and peaceful elections is for us to abide by the rules as prescribed by the Comelec, which is the body mandated by the Constitution to conduct the elections,” Bello said over government-run DZRB Saturday.
“We must prevent any derailment of election come May 10, 2010. We are going to elect the next officers — the next president, the next vice president, and the next senators of the Republic of the Philippines — we have to see to it that the will of the people will be heard,” he said.
“We have to preserve the sanctity of the ballot. That is what we need to improve the development of the country,” he added.
He said administration party Lakas-Kampi-CMD is already bracing itself for the campaign period, which will start this week, particularly on brainstorming of ideas and strategies. Bello will be running for senator under the administration party and will be resigning from the Cabinet effective February 10.
“I want to attend the last Cabinet meeting of the President para makapagpaalam ng maayos sa Pangulo, makapagpasalamat sa kanya sa pagkakataon na binigay sa akin makapaglingkod sa ating bayan,” Bello said.
The Cabinet meeting is slated on Feb. 9 in Valenza, Bulacan, which is part of the “Luzon Urban Beltway.” The President had just ended her Cyber Corridor tour last week. Both the Luzon Urban Beltway and the Cyber Corridor are part of the administration’s Super Regions.
