Garrido shines in cage tilt
Janrey Garrido is fast emerging as one of the best clutch players in the Freego-Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Assocation (MMTLBA) tournament.
That he proved last Saturday when he scored 10 of his team-high 24 points in the final period to help Hope Christian High School beat Uno High School in their quarterfinal series, 74-63, at the Chiang Kai Shek gym in Tondo.
The sophomore from Iloilo also had five rebounds, four assists and three steals to win the Freego Reflex Denim Player of the Week honors in the tournament presented by Fresh Gear Revolution Denim.
The cat-quick Garrido thus became the second Hope Christian player to win the Freego-sponsored weekly honors after wingman Jessie Pedrosa. The rookie forward won it last week.
“One of the big reasons why we’re doing well in the tournament is because of the all-around performance of Garrido,” said Hope Christian’s Bernard Yang. “I just hope he will continue playing that way so that we can advance to the finals this time.”
Overall, Garrido shot 8-of-14 from the field but the intangibles he provided for the team were more than enough to disarm the Uneans.
Pedrosa and Uno’s Isaac Lim also dished out huge numbers but Garrido’s all-around performance was the best for the week.
