The Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) on Monday named Fil-American Cecil Mamiit to lead the RP Davis Cup team against Japan in its campaign in the Asia-Oceania Zone Group I next month.

Mamiit will be joined by another Fil-American, Treat Huey and top locals Johnny Arcilla and Francis Casey Alcantara with Chris Cuarto as the non-playing captain.

The squad was formed after a week of deliberation by the Philta officials and coaches.

Mamiit and Huey were seeded into the team based on their past performances.

The Philippines meets Japan in the first round of the competitions on March 5 to 7 in Japan.

“Actually, Cecil and Treat are already shoo-ins due to their performance at the Laos Southeast Asian Games. Johnny is also a veteran Davis Cupper. Yung fourth slot ang talagang pinagpilian,” Philta vice president Randy Villanueva said.

Mamiit and Huey teamed up for the doubles gold medal in the December, 2009 Laos SEAG with Mamiit adding the singles gold by beating Huey in an all-Filipino finals.

According to Villanueva, Alcantara was picked due to his wide experience in international competitions including the Grand Slam events.
