POC OKs PSC’s picks
The selection of two tennis players and one bowler by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) as shoo-ins to the 2010 Asian Games in China sat well with chief of mission Joey Romasanta.
“The names that were announced are likely the same athletes who will be nominated by their respective national sports associations next week,” said Romasanta, also the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) spokesperson, Wednesday.
PSC chairman Harry Angping bared over the weekend that US-based tennisters Cecil Mamiit and Conrad Huey and kegler Biboy Rivera have been selected to form the list of athletes who would receive ample funding from the agency as they prepare for the Asian Games scheduled November 12 to 27 in the city of Guangzhou.
The PSC expects the number to grow in the coming weeks with the conclusion of its consultative meetings with different NSAs.
Romasanta said all the NSAs have until February 15 to submit a list of athletes and their training program as well in the runup to the Asian Games.
Romasanta is urging sports leaders to make sure the athletes they intend to nominate have genuine chances of making it to the podium since the competition level in the Asian Games is far more superior than that in the Southeast Asian Games, where, in most sports, the gold medalist is not even at par with the bronze medal winner in the Asiad.
