QC mulls voting center for seniors
To increase voters turnout, a Quezon City councilor Wednesday proposed a resolution urging the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to establish separate polling places for senior citizens and physically-challenged individuals.
Councilor Francisco Calalay of the city’s first district said that proposed resolution SP-4593, S-2009 seeks to create special voting precincts at the ground floor in all polling places for the elderly and physically-challenged persons.
He said the proposed measure aims to entice senior citizens and the disabled to exercise their right to vote saying that despite their physical limitations they are still entitled to the same rights and privileges as normal members of society.
Calalay said that most senior citizens and voters with physical disabilities have complained of difficulty in moving around polling places during the election prompting them to just stay home.
The first district councilor cited that the 1987 Constitution and Local Government Code guarantee the promotion of the general welfare of citizens especially the needy and disadvantaged persons like senior citizens and the disabled persons.
