More than 1,800 families rendered homeless after the wrath of storm Ondoy destroyed their shanties along Tullahan River last year, will soon find a decent home as the Valenzuela City government will start laying foundations of the 16-unit buildings for them Friday.

In a news conference at the Manila Pavillion on Wednesday, Valenzuela Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian told reporters that they will be relocating at least 1,813 families living on the banks of the river to the 1.9-hectare land in Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela City, that will be called "Disiplina Village" and in Barangay Marulas, Valenzuela City that will be dubbed as "Ecology Center."

"Hindi na muling babalik sa gilid ng creek sa Tullahan river ang mga pamilyang nawalan ng tahanan matapos ang pananalasa ng bagyong Ondoy noong nakalipas na taon," he said.

Gatchalian said he will lead city officials, beneficiaries, and representatives of non-government organizations (NGOs) at the first ground-breaking ceremony for the first unit to be built in "Disiplina Village.”

“We envision for our less fortunate residents a place they can call their own, even if it means building a separate community for them. We intend to do everything possible to create a community with amenities,” he said.

The Valenzuela City government will first build the housing units for 900 families at Disiplina Village before laying the foundation on the Ecology Center where the remaining 900 families will be transferred.

Gatchalian also said that beneficiaries will only pay from P300-P500 rent for each month, in a span of 25 years.
