Gifts for your geeky Valentine

It’s Valentine’s Day and surely your scifi movie-quoting, pocket protector-wearing geek partner won’t be going for the generic flowers-and-chocolate routine. The modern geek always looks for a pinch of science, a dash of pop culture, and a whole lot of ingenuity. So what should you get for your geeky Valentine?

1. The Rubik’s cube is one of the world’s best selling toys. It is a classic in geek culture with its simple, yet mind-boggling mechanism. A year ago, an upgraded version of this classic geek toy was introduced at an international toy fair.

The Rubik’s TouchCube foregoes the movable stickered cubelets and instead, employs touch sensor technology and light-up squares. Instead of turning and twisting a row, a user will simply swipe a finger across the squares and the colored lights will follow. It has an internal processor so it can give a hint and play sound effects. It also makes for a good lights display as it scrambles and unscrambles itself while charging. Your geek will surely have fun with the fusion of the touchscreen technology and a timeless toy.

2. Almost every literature geek and/or English major has read Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. And thanks to popular culture, everyone knows about zombies. Put them together and we have Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith.

Published by Quirk Books, this New York Times bestseller is a retelling of Austen’s novel infused with the popular elements of zombie fiction. In a zombie-infested England, Elizabeth Bennet crosses paths with Fitzwilliam Darcy and their story of love, wealth and zombie-fighting unfolds. This would probably make literary purists cringe, fanboys increasingly rabid, and your geek will probably be somewhere in between.

3. In keeping with the spirit of reimagining classics to better fit with our times, Star Trek, one of the pillars of science fiction, has also been rebooted. And what geek hasn’t seen JJ Abrams’ 2009 hit, Star Trek?

A refreshing new story, upgraded special effects, and a fresh new cast lead by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, made the franchise more accessible to non-Trekkies, yet references to the original series, such as the participation of Leonard Nimoy, has kept long-time fans from being too alienated by the huge changes. The DVD and Blu-ray releases have a ton of special features including commentaries, deleted scenes and cast bloopers. Geek and Star Trek, ‘nuff said.

4. Here’s one that both you and your geek can use, Valentine’s Day or not. The geniuses over at ThinkGeek.com came up with the 8-Bit Dynamic Life Shirt. The shirts come in pairs, one for you and one for your geek. The shirt has a front panel of six animated hearts that light up with respect to how close the shirts are, as powered by proximity based radio frequency transmission/detection. The panels are removable so that the shirts can be washed without damaging the light-up hearts. This is a very geeky and videogame-inspired way of tracking you and your geek’s proximity.

So keep your geek happy this Valentine’s Day! Good luck!
