Cordillera to harness hydro assets
TABUK CITY, Kalinga – The Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) Regional Development Council (RDC) and provincial officials here are working on the establishment of numerous locally-owned power corporations to utilize the abundance of alternative sources of power such as the region’s hydro resources in order to make the Cordillera energy self-sufficient in the next several years.
The region’s energy potentials was discussed by regional and provincial officials during the first quarterly meeting of the RDC-CAR held in this newly established city, citing the establishment of a series of mini-hydro power plants along the 13 major river systems in the different parts of the region will be enough to sustain the increasing power demand in urban and rural areas.
Because of the region’s vast forest cover which sustains the abundance of water flowing in the said river systems, the RDC-CAR cited the existence and operation of mini-hydro power plants will also helped in reducing the increasing power rates being charged to the consumers, especially in many non-viable areas of the region where there is no return of investment in bringing power to the countryside.
