UST denies La Salle a sweep
University of Santo Tomas ruined the sweep bid of La Salle with a 23-25, 25-20, 26-28, 25-16, 15-12 decision in the 72nd UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.
The Tigresses rallied from a set down behind power-hitting Angeli Tabaquero, server Rhea Dimaculangan and lefty Aiza Maizo to end La Salle’s 13-game winning run.
So tight was the match the Tigresses needed close to two hours to dispatch the Lady Archers.
Tabaquero and Maizo led UST in scoring with 19 and18 points, respectively, but it was Dimaculangan’s service aces that that finally took the fight out of the Lady Archers.
UST, which finished second, will enter the Final Four with a 12-2 record and a twice-to-beat advantage against third-running Ateneo (10-4) on Saturday. UST is gunning for its first finals appearance since winning the title in 2007.
Stephanie Mercado, who finished second to Far Eastern University's Cherry May Vivas in the scoring race, had 19 points as La Salle finished with a 13-1 record for the second straight season. It will meet No. 4 Adamson in the other semis pairing.
