Town councilor gunned down in Lanao del Norte
CAMP ALAGAR, Cagayan de Oro City - A town councilor was gunned down Monday morning by three unidentified hooded men in Barangay Buntong, Salvador town, Lanao del Norte province, according to a sketchy report reaching Police Regional Office 10 on Tuesday.
The report said that Subair Tawan-tawan, 40, town councilor and chair of the council’s committee on health was on his way to attend a regular council meeting when he was shot at close range.
Tawan-tawan, who was wearing a barong, was on board his single motorcycle when three armed men wearing bonnets flagged him down and shot him at close range, the report stated.
Responding Salvador police officers found Tawan-tawan lying on the road, his face blown beyond recognition while his body was riddled with bullets. He was buried on the same day in Buntong in accordance with Muslim tradition.
Police investigating team found several empty M-16 shells on the crime scene.
The killers’ motives identities are still not known as of this posting.
PRO 10 Regional Director Chief Supt. Danilo T. Empedrad ordered an in-depth investigation.
It was gathered that the victim was a peace advocate, having initiated peace keeping efforts in the municipality of Salvador, a Christian dominated town.
He was also instrumental in the retrieval and rescue of a child who was kidnapped last year in Kapatagan town by armed men and was brought to Lanao del Sur, it was further gathered.
