Benilde scores double win in NCAA football
College of St. Benilde ended the eight-year reign of powerhouse San Beda College after the Blazers pounded out a stunning 1-0 victory over the Red Lions in the 85th NCAA football senior final at the football field inside the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The Blazers made it a double celebration after their junior counterpart – the La Salle Greenhills-CSB – claimed the high school division crown at the expense of the Red Cubs, 3-0.
The Blazers thus finished the season with an 8-1-1 (win-loss-draw) record, winning only their first crown in the seniors side since joining the league 12 years ago.
Jan Philipp Dalaota, a Human Resource sophomore student delivered the winning margin for the CSB seniors team when he scored a header from an assist from a crossing midfielder Patrick Millan 20 minutes into the first half.
CSB’s Lois Madrio was named this year’s Most Valuable Player and Best Mid-fielder, while Justin Paluga and Benito Rosalia, Best Defender and Goal Keeper of the year.
In the junior’s side, it was two-time MVP Jinggoy Valmayor who played the hero’s role after he scored two goals in the first half before Ian Garcia completed the rout with a goal in the final 10 minutes of the second half.
It was the junior Blazers’ eighth championship with Jacob Ochoa being named the MVP and Garcia top scorer of the year.
The football competition is second to the last event of the second semester with the staging of centerpiece athletics capping the season on March 1 at the Rizal Memorial Track and Field Oval.
