The 43 suspected communist rebels arrested early this month in Morong, Rizal raid are welcome at the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters in Camp Crame in Quezon City if they want to get out of military custody, Director General Jesus Verzosa, PNP chief, said Thursday.

All the police need is a court ruling stating that their detention is being transferred from the Army's 2nd Infantry Division camp in Tanay, Rizal to the PNP national headquarters, Verzosa said.

Verzosa was reacting to the proposal made by lawyers of the so-called Morong 43 for them to be moved to police custody, citing the alleged torture they are suffering from military custody.

The PNP chief said the police would find a suitable detention facility for the 43 suspected rebels, adding that right now they have in their custody several high-risk detainees--from suspected terrorists to rebel military officers.

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim and 17 other military personnel involved in the Oakwood mutiny and Manila Peninsula siege are currently detained at the PNP Custodial Center.

While the Morong 43 claimed that they are health workers doing a legitimate medical training during the raid, Verzosa said they have been receiving reports that some of them are actually rebels who were involved in several attacks against police stations in the past.

"I was informed some of those arrested were involved in the ambush of some of our personnel some two years ago in Rodriguez (Rizal) and some attacks in San Narciso Police Station (Quezon province)," said Verzosa.
