Purefoods slams SMB, faces Alaska in finals

Games Wednesday (Araneta Coliseum)
5 p.m. — San Miguel vs Ginebra
7:30 p.m. — Alaska vs Purefoods
Purefoods TJ Hotdogs closed the door on San Miguel Beer Sunday night, scoring an 87-78 win at the Astrodome to secure the second finals berth in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup.
It was the third straight win, and fourth in the series, for the Giants who forged a best-of-seven Finals with Alaska Milk, which had earlier swept Ginebra in four games, starting Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Veteran point guard Roger Yap, in his ninth year in the PBA and seventh with Purefoods, delivered another solid performance as he scattered 20 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and added four assists in 40 minutes of action.
James Yap also had a big game with 18 points while Marc Pingris finished with a double-double 15 points and 13 rebounds.
“We’re witnesses to a great miracle in this series. We know that San Miguel team is very strong. I looked at the rosters at the start of the conference and I was just hoping that we could be in the semis,” Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio said.
“But my players wanted more. We know all along that it doesn’t take the best players to win (title), but the players who fit in the best,” he added.
This will be the seventh time that the Aces and the Giants will duel for the title.
The two teams went 3-3 in their six previous meetings in the Finals. The last time they met in the championship was in the 2002 Governors’ Cup won by Purefoods (4-3), while Alaska triumphed (4-1) the last time they clashed in an all-Filipino conference in 2000.
