Purefoods races to 2-0 lead

Games Sunday (Araneta Coliseum)
3:45 p.m. — I-Remit vs Army (PWBL)
6:00 p.m. — Alaska vs Purefoods
Kerby Raymundo could only split his charities with 1.5 seconds left but this proved enough to give Purefoods an 86-85 win over Alaska Milk and a 2-0 lead in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup Finals Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
Raymundo’s charity capped a big Purefoods uprising in the final six minutes that saw them overhaul a 14-point lead by Alaska, which looked on the way to even the series after a push bridging the third and fourth periods gave the Aces a 78-74 lead.
The Giants, who lost leads of as much as 13 points in the first half, however, regained their defensive touch and inched their way back to the top behind James Yap and Raymundo, who combined for the Giants’ final nine points.
So hot was the two squads’ duel in the last six minutes that an Alaska fan, later identified as Steve Racelis, suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the St. Luke’s Hospital by the medical team.
The Giants go for a big 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series this Sunday at 6 p.m., also at the Araneta Coliseum.
Early on, the Giants seemed headed for a walk in the park as they jumpstarted their attack by playing defense, giving Alaska a different look when Marc Pingris, a 6-foot-4 forward, guarded a smaller 5-foot-8 playmaker LA Tenorio, which disrupted Alaska’s offense in the early goings.
Despite point guard Roger Yap being on the bench most of the time after he hit his head on the floor after a collision with Willie Miller in the first period, the Giants still managed to lead by 12 points a few times, the last was at 28-16 on Rafi Reavis’ basket late in the first period.
James Yap, who had 24 points in the series opener, was on target again in the early goings as he scattered 17 in the first two periods, highlighted by an alley-oop off a Kerby Raymundo lob pass.
Rafi Reavis, who earlier had a two-handed follow-up dunk off a missed shot by Yap, gave Purefoods a 13-point lead, 43-30, midway in the second.
LA Tenorio, who was scoreless in the first period, nailed his second three-pointer in the period to make it 33-43, but Yap answered with a jumper and Raymundo, who baited Sonny Thoss for his fourth foul, split his charities to make it a 13-point game anew, 46-33.
Late in the second period, Alaska guard Brandon Cablay pushed Purefoods playmaker Roger Yap, apparently an act of retaliation when the latter appeared to have planted an elbow to his rib cage.
