Olivar defends President’s trips
Deputy Presidential Spokesman Gary Olivar defended that the President’s travels abroad have advanced the country’s diplomatic and trade relations with other countries despite criticisms by some groups that they were costly and unnecessary.
Such trips, Olivar added, have also helped save lives of several Filipinos from the death chamber abroad.
Olivar made the remarks after former President Estrada reportedly claimed he plans to make foreign trips if re-elected in office, unlike President Arroyo.
"The Palace reminds our people that foreign trips by the President are indispensable part of diplomacy because the personal interaction at higher levels can achieve quick results on critical issues and cement long-term friendships. This is especially important for our country with its large OFW presence as well as active foreign trade and investment," he said.
"The lives alone of our countrymen whom PGMA brought from prison and even death sentences abroad are beyond any price," added Oivar.
Since she assumed office in 2001, the President has made 77 foreign trips, mostly in the United States and China, becoming the most traveled leader in the country's history.
During her presidency, she also made a number of unofficial trips abroad, mostly bringing her family for a quick getaway. Her last foreign trip, however, was a family vacation in Hong Kong last December.
Last year, President Arroyo drew the ire of many groups due to her alleged lavish dinners while visiting the United States. Apparently to protect the President from the blow of criticisms. some of her congressional allies claimed they paid the hefty restaurant bill.
