Three fresh faces in the national boxing pool leaves for Iran Tuesday to participate in the ASBC Youth Boxing Championships in Tehran and jumpstart their preparation for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in August.

Geno Cabugnan, Daryl Basadre and Engelbert Moralde were chosen to represent the country in the week-long invitational tournament, which starts Wednesday.

Eighteen-year-old Cabugnan will participate in the 54kg division (bantamweight), while Panabo native Moralde will be lined up for the 48kg (light-flyweight) class and Basadre, who hails from Misamis Oriental and is the younger brother of Doha Asian Games bronze medalist Genebert Basadre, will compete in the 51kg (flyweight) category.

The troika will be accompanied by coach Elmer Pamisa and ABAP executive director Ed Picson, who said that the selection of the three boxers were based on their performances in the recent National Championships in Puerto Princesa, Palawan and some area and local tournaments as well their daily training.

The association also considered the country’s chances and assessed that Filipinos are best suited to win in the three lowest weight categories.
