With two to three hours of rotating brownouts expected in Metro Manila and neighboring regions this week, a Quezon City councilor asked concerned authorities Tuesday to dispatch traffic enforcers in key areas to minimize traffic congestion further worsened by the power interruption and extreme heat.

Councilor Jaime Borres of the city’s third district said he will meet with officials of the city’s Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS) and the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) as traffic snarls worsen when traffic lights conk out.

He said he has received complaints from motorists that what used to be a leisurely drive of 10 minutes from the city hall area to Cubao turned to almost an hour of nightmare as vehicles tried to maneuver at the unmanned intersections.

Borres said traffic personnel should be placed especially in critical areas on extended periods to direct traffic until such time that the situation starts to normalize.

“It is very unthinkable that some intersections remained unmanned by traffic personnel when we should be aware of the possible circumstances that may occur during these times,’’ Borres said.

He reminded motorists to remain disciplined even in times of distress assuring them that there is no need to lose one’s cool since the situation is only temporary.

“Let us all be gentlemen. Things will only worsen if we try to outmaneuver other motorists recklessly. Always follow traffic rules and always practice defensive driving to avoid further inconveniences,’’ Borres said.

To avoid being late for appointments, Borres advised the public to plan their trips ahead of time and to give at least two hours of lead time for important schedules or meetings.

He said flexibility eases any form of unfavorable situation adding that things can be accomplished and one can be productive by simply preparing a few hours before once scheduled appointments.

“Let us adjust, adjust and adjust. That is the best way to be productive no matter what the circumstances are. Traffic congestion is no excuse to cancel or be late for important appointments.

Just leave and prepare early and things can be done,’’ Borres said.
