UST set to capture UAAP overall title
University of Santo Tomas was denied a championship in both the men’s and women’s football but it appears the Thomasians can’t be derailed in winning a record 12th straight overall championship in the UAAP.
With four titles and four runner-up finishes in eight competitions in the second semester, UST should be heading for a record 37th overall crown when the league's 72nd season wraps up either today or Sunday depending on the outcome of the ongoing finals series in baseball.
No official results have been made available pending completion of all events but the Tigers seemed to have enhanced their reputation as the country's premier sporting university ahead of La Salle, Ateneo and University of the Philippines.
After the first semester, UST pooled 153 points to lead La Salle by 17 points. Ateneo and UP tallied 118 and 111 points, respectively.
UST started its title conquest last February when it captured its first-ever championship in softball then won its third title in the last four seasons in men's lawn tennis.
But the most notable championship victories UST won came in volleyball as it scored a double victory in the men's and women's division. The Tigers made it a three-peat over FEU in the men’s side while the Tigresses dethroned champion La Salle in the distaff side.
UST also finished second in women's athletics and lawn tennis.
Meanwhile, Adamson shoots for a three-peat today when it takes on National University in Game 2 of the baseball finals at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.
The Falcons took the series opener, 3-1, last Sunday.
