Statement neckpieces have always been close to my heart. They’re no-brainer choices for when you need to glam up a boring outfit and their beaded intricacy and the labor involved make them priceless when done the right way.  So, when I saw this wonderfully beaded bib on my friend, I just had to find out who made it.

With a long list of customers, such as Kris Aquino, Ruffa Guttierez, and American celebrities like Tinsley Mortimer and Khloe Kardashian, it’s no wonder that this designer is extremely busy and brimming with creative designs.

In between making bibs, artist Nicole Whisenhunt shares with us her passion for making every woman stylishly confident:

Manila Bulletin: What type of jewelry do you like?

Nicole Whisenhunt: I love statement jewelry and accessories! I love bold pieces that stand out, and I’m particularly fond of necklaces. I don’t hesitate to paying a premium for one-of-a-kind pieces and I believe in investing in accessories that will last different trends.

MB: How did you stumble into this creative outlet?

While working at an advertising firm, I tried experimenting on a new technique, sewing. From there, I made my first embellished neckpiece. A friend of mine took the piece to New York and received many good comments, I then continued making more pieces and sold them to my friends.

MB: Did you make your first neckpiece by hand and by yourself?

It took me about two to two and a half months to create it. During that time, I would consult with a very good friend of mine who is a designer, Finina Tugade, and she helped me with the proper technique on how to complete my first embellished neckpiece.

MB: How long does it take your staff to make one neckpiece?

Depending on the design, one craftswoman can take a minimum of 40 hours; and for the more intricate pieces, a maximum of 96 hours to complete. When coming up with a completely new design, it can take us anywhere between three to six weeks to get the product perfected.

MB: How was training like?

I currently have 12 girls. Training is a minimum of 2 and a half months. We are very particular with the beading. Since we use almost the smallest type of beads, it takes a lot of patience and practice for the girls to get their skills perfected. For our beading we aim for quality finishings.

MB: How many pieces do you make per design?

Twelve. Although, I’ve also made quite a few one-of-a-kind pieces.
